MAXI ROACH™ Genoa has been
developed, by MAXI ROACH™, to enhance your yacht with even
more lift and drive than ever before.
It is globally accepted that a
triangle is an inefficient shape for a sail, but up until now this
has become the norm.
Many years ago “hanked on”
Genoas used to have small horizontal battens to gain as much area
as they could, but with the introduction of roller furling gears
over the last 35 years people have forgotten.
We can now produce a genoa with
a full roach which gives you more lift to drag than your yacht would
have achieved before. By having a positive roach as the main, as
you reef your sails your sail leech stays higher than a hollowed
out sail.
You will see from Figure a. the first reefing point,
from the red line representing the MAXI ROACH™ Genoa where
the cross over point is where the head of the sail will be when
reefed at that point.
Figure b. presents how a standard sail would be at
the same point of reef. To the second red line you will see the
standard sail well below the true wind point.
MAXI ROACH Mainsail - looking at the diagram on the
left is the MAXI ROACH and on the right is the standard sail. When
reefed to the first batten point you can see compared to the standard
sail the roach is a lot higher into the true wind.
You can see from the diagram that an undercut sail
when reefed will work its way down the foil a lot faster than the
MAXI ROACH. If this happens your standard genoa at a 100% is only
good for down wind or off wind sailing. Whereas the MAXI ROACH stays
higher and acts like a blade and the sails are at the top where
the true wind is, giving your boat the performance that it needs
even though you have reefed your sails.
Our MAXI ROACH genoas are made 140% but with an increased
area that on most occasions would equal 150%.
